DROITWICH AMATEUR BOXING CLUB

Droitwich Amateur Boxing Club was founded in 1977 and has always had two main objectives – to be a Centre of Excellence for those who wish to take up the sport of Amateur Boxing to help them achieve their potential; and to be a community resource for those who wish to learn boxing skills and to use boxing training in order to keep fit.

The club has enjoyed considerable success on both fronts. Droitwich boxers, both male and female, have won National Championships on 10 occasions, 2 very recently (Sian O’Toole [17] Female Youth Champion and Joe Doyle [14] Male Junior Cadet Champion). Sian has gone on to be selected to represent Great Britain in the European Youth Championships in Bulgaria in July.

Specific “Boxing Fitness” sessions for all ages are run twice a week, as are sessions for the 8-12 age group as an introduction to boxing with games. Club coaches also provide schools with taster sessions or more long-term training.

The club is a registered Community Amateur Sports Club (CASC) and has been awarded England Boxing club mark status – one of only a few boxing clubs in the West Midlands to achieve this distinction.

All the coaches are volunteers. They are qualified through England Boxing and have received first aid training and have DBS (child and vulnerable adult) clearance.

In October 2013 the club moved into its state-of-art new gymnasium on the King George’s Playing Fields behind the Droitwich Sports and Leisure Centre. The cost of the new building was £300,000 funded primarily by England Boxing and Sport England lottery grants, massive fund-raising by the club and supporters, smaller grants (including a New Build grant) and a loan from the Council which is still having to be paid off at £4,000 a year. The building is in constant use open 6 evenings a week.

Financially the club is heavily dependent upon membership subscriptions and upon the generosity of occasional sponsors, donors and of coaches and parents who do not charge for services. The club would be delighted to hear from any potential sponsors or supporters or from possible volunteers’.
